Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has lauded Ryan Yates after Friday’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.
Billy Sharp’s header had looked to give the Blades a massive win in the play-off race until Yates popped up at the death.
The 24-year-old glanced a header into the corner of the net following a superb corner by James Garner.
Yates sent the away end into pandemonium with his goal which came in the fifth additional minute at the end of the 90.
The Forest midfield does come in for some rather unfair criticism from certain sections of the fan base.
Cooper isn’t having any of that though and has raved about the youngster following his late, late show.
He told Nottinghamshire Live: “I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s just an absolute diamond of a lad. He’ll do anything for the football club and anything for the team.
“He’s one of the most selfless players I’ve ever worked with.
“I’m not surprised he’s got on the end of that one because he will do anything for this football club.
“I think we’re starting to appreciate what he brings now, which is great.”
New Forest deal should be on the horizon for Yates
Cooper has really got the best out of Yates and that much has been evident since the Welshman came into the club.
The midfielder has gone from being inconsistent to really kicking on and proving he’s worthy of a shirt at the football club.
Yates was dropped to the bench for last week’s game against Bristol City but he was back in the starting eleven on Friday.
He came up trumps late in the day and now, he will hope to help himself to a few more goals for the club.
Yates is at a nice age to continue improving and as a result, the club would be wise to offer him a new deal in the near future.
