Former Nottingham Forest striker Grant Holt has raved about the performance of Ryan Yates during last night’s FA Cup win.

He was part of the ITV4 coverage as the Reds came from behind to beat Huddersfield and book a quarter-final date with Liverpool.

Yates notched his sixth goal of the 2021/22 campaign after beating the offside trap to head beyond Jamal Blackman.

Forest will now play in the last eight of the FA Cup for the first time since 1996 and Holt thought Yates had a steady game.

He told ITV4: “He’s worked really hard. He’s come through the academy, he’s been out on loan moves so he’s done it the hard way. He’s now back doing what he wanted to do when he first joined the football club; to score goals.

“I thought he was outstanding…his work rate, his movement and you know what you’re going to get from him week in and week out.”

Holt signed for Forest in 2005 from Rochdale and would enjoy a pretty decent relationship with the club’s supporters.

He scored 25 goals in 108 appearances before leaving in 2008. He would eventually play Premier League football with Norwich and prove a lot of his critics wrong.

Yates must not kick on after brilliant Forest period

The 24-year-old has been magnificent under Steve Cooper but last night he took his form to a whole new level.

Interestingly, there is probably still more to come from the player. He’s at the age now where he’s not the complete performer but there were clear signs last night that he can get there.

The real challenge for the youngster is consistency. If he can produce the level he showed against Huddersfield regularly, then he will be playing Premier League football in no time.

Yates has quickly become a real asset for Forest under Cooper and long may that continue.
