Former Nottingham Forest striker Grant Holt has raved about Sam Surridge following last night’s 2-1 win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup.

The Reds talisman opened his City Ground account with a well-taken goal to draw Forest level after Tom Lees had opened the scoring.

Surridge was signed from Stoke during the January transfer window. He’s a player that Steve Cooper knows well from his team at Swansea where he scored seven goals in 23 appearances.

The 23-year-old will be happy to have his first Forest goal in the bag and former Reds finisher Holt praised him live on ITV.

He said: “It was sublime. For your first goal for the club to open your body and finish like that, it was absolutely fantastic. He really deserved it.”

Surridge worked himself into the ground last night. He didn’t give the Huddersfield defence a moment of respite and that didn’t go unnoticed in the stands.

Keinan Davis was handed a well-earned rest after his efforts at Sheffield United. In his absence, Surridge showed what he’s all about.

The youngster will now hope for more goals as the season reaches a climax. First of all, he’d welcome the chance to start once again on Saturday against Reading.

Surridge performance is a bonus for Forest

In the absence of Lewis Grabban, the Reds have needed someone capable of stepping up. Davis has been good performance-wise but he’s not a 20-goal a season man.

In Surridge, Forest look like they might have a player with some similar qualities to those Grabban possesses.

Signing him in January could prove a masterstroke and his solid performance last night should put him in good shape for the rest of the campaign.

Given that he’s only 23, Surridge has also shown enough to suggest that he can be a decent signing going forward too.
