Nottingham Forest courted Reading star Tom Holmes during the summer and again in the January transfer window.
On Saturday, they will get a front-row seat to take a closer look at Holmes as he comes up against Forest at the City Ground.
Holmes has been playing as a centre-back this season. Naturally, he’s a right-back, however, and the youngster is certainly versatile.
It’s not been a particularly good season for the Royals. Only Peterborough have conceded more times than Reading this season and they’re staring relegation in the face.
Paul Ince recently replaced Valjko Paunovic and ultimately, they need a run of wins to come quickly.
Forest will hope that doesn’t come this week and they will be optimistic that a player firmly on their radar doesn’t have a good game.
Holmes recently missed the game against Blackpool but he did return to the side for last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Millwall.
He will hope to be in the side for this weekend’s contest at the City Ground and he might hope to showcase his talent.
The versatile performer has come through the ranks at Reading and this season he’s made 30 appearances in all competitions.
Competition: Holmes set for Forest audition and he could prove ideal
Forest could find themselves in need of defenders next season and the fact he can play in a number of positions would be ideal.
Joe Worrall, Steve Cook and Scott McKenna is a formidable back three. Tobias Figueiredo is out of contract though and competition will be required.
- SIGNINGS: Reds add two to young ranks
At right-back, Forest will also be in the hunt for a player. Djed Spence will go back to Middlesbrough, with Mohamed Drager’s future uncertain.
Crucially, Holmes will be out of contract and only a very small amount of compensation would be required to land him.
As a result, the defender will know that his days at Reading are numbered and he will want to show Forest what he’s all about this weekend.
