Nottingham Forest Under-23s thrashed West Bromwich Albion 5-0 at The Hawthorns last night. A new name emerged as a standout, with Alex Gibson-Hammond showcasing his brilliance in the West Midlands.

The Reds opted to start the game utilising a 3-4-2-1 system. Gibson-Hammond lined up in the left-sided wing-back role and he didn’t disappoint.

The versatile performer helped himself to a goal; scoring Forest’s second of the night. He also registered a pre assist and managed the full 90 minutes of action.

Gibson-Hammond signed a professional contract in February 2021. Last season he was a regular with the under-18s but has made the step up during 2021/22.

The 19-year-old was previously on the books at Tottenham. Forest picked him up when he left the North Londoners and he’s currently working extremely hard.

Gibson-Hammond has been Andy Reid’s utility man this season. He can operate on either side of the pitch and is comfortable playing in defensive or attacking roles.

His goal last night was his third of the season. A delicious backheel by Will Swan saw it fall kindly to Billy Fewster. He squared the ball to Gibson-Hammond who couldn’t miss.

Gibson-Hammond can earn Forest extension

When he signed his first professional deal he spoke ambitiously about chasing his next contract. Given his form this season, perhaps he will earn a City Ground stay.

He’s proving one of many players who is thriving under Reid’s management. He’s doing great things and the players are clearly playing for him this season.

  • MESSAGE: Garner issues statement to Reds fans

Gibson-Hammond is quick, possesses lots of skill and is also capable of passing the ball with relative ease. If he could add a few more goals and assists, he’d be an even bigger asset than he already is.

Last night, the youngster played with a real smile on his face. The challenge now is to continue that level of consistency until the end of the campaign.
