Newcastle United will discuss potentially making a bid to sign Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson during the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe is set to meet with the club’s director of football and recruitment staff this week when summer targets will be on the radar.

Johnson will be a wanted man. He was the subject of four failed bids from Brentford in January and at one point it looked as though he’d be off.

The Reds stood firm though. Johnson has kicked on since the window closed and interest in his services will be sky-high.

The Best XI Already NOT Going To The 2022 World Cup

Johnson has scored 12 goals during 2021/22 and has also claimed five assists. He’s one of Steve Cooper’s best performing players and the future looks bright.

Newcastle have been in fine form of late. They’ve really kicked on in the top-flight and the threat of relegation has been extinguished by Howe.

The challenge next year will be to kick on. With a newfound wealth at the club, they’ll likely be in for a particularly busy summer.

The Daily Mail claim that Johnson will be among the names discussed by the Magpies this week when a series of meetings take place.

Forest must stand firm over Johnson

The ball is really in Johnson’s court. In the summer, he will have just a year to run on his deal and Forest must try desperately to extend that.

Forest would dearly love to keep their forward at the club. He’s been in fine form and naturally, he’s the club’s biggest match-winner right now.

This week he will head off to play for Wales in their World Cup qualifiers. After that, he’ll return to Forest where he will hope to help the team secure a play-off place.

Long-term, Forest have to act. Losing Johnson isn’t worth thinking about and the club has to preserve his valuation by tempting him into a new contract.
