Nottingham Forest hearts were broken in 2020 when Matty Cash signed for Aston Villa. Now, he’s off the World Cup in Qatar after Poland defeated Sweden in last night’s play-off final.
The 24-year-old has only made four appearances for his country but now he can look forward to the grandest stage of them all.
Cash has been a revelation for Aston Villa. He’s developed into a superb footballer and the Premier League is something that he’s taken in his stride.
The youngster has scored three goals and claimed six assists from 59 appearances for Villa. The challenge for Steven Gerrard is perhaps to get him chipping in on a more frequent basis.
Cash was fantastic for Forest. He was deployed as a right-back by Sabri Lamouchi for the 2019/20 campaign and didn’t disappoint.
He made 45 appearances during that campaign and very nearly helped the Reds reach the play-offs under their French manager.
Now, he’s got bigger fish to fry. Poland will head to the World Cup and with a plethora of young talent, they’ll hope to make waves.
Cash is a big player these days and it was Forest who started the ball rolling on what looks set to be a fantastic career.
Former Forest players and Jack Grealish congratulate Cash
The Manchester City man spent last season playing alongside Cash. The pair were two of Villa’s standout performers and he congratulated the speedster using just three words.
Cash played with some good players at Forest. He also played with a few who failed to make an impact, including Jason Cummings and Zach Clough.
Those two have also commented on Cash’s Instagram post following the game. They’re clearly excited for their former teammate and have wished him well.
It will be surreal to see Cash at a World Cup. It doesn’t seem long ago that he was strutting his stuff on Trentside. Now, he’s set to be rubbing shoulders with the world’s best on the grandest stage of them all.
