Nottingham Forest midfielder James Garner played 90 minutes for the England under-21s last night. The young Three Lions outfit thrashed Albania 3-0 with Folarin Balogun netting twice and Curtis Jones grabbing the other.
The Reds maestro is on loan from Manchester United. He has been in fine form since the turn of the year and could genuinely get a chance to shine at Old Trafford next season.
For now, he’s hoping to fire Forest to promotion to the Premier League. The Reds have 10 games remaining and currently sit three points off the top six.
Garner has proved very useful to Forest over the last 18 months. He signed last season to help Forest stay in the Championship and under Steve Cooper he’s helping them try and achieve a different goal.
The 21-year-old deserved his call up to the England under-21 setup. He partnered with Liverpool gem Jones last night and the pair looked impressive throughout.
Some statistics from Sofa Score highlighted his brilliance against Albania. He completed 89% of his passes, making 64 of the 72 he attempted.
He was also accurate with long balls; completing three of the five he attempted. Garner was also good defensively making two clearances and claiming one interception.
Garner has been Forest shining light this season
The youngster has been fantastic for the Reds this season. He has grown as a player and he’s clearly benefitted from the faith shown in him by Cooper.
Forest are chasing down a play-off place this season. The international break may have come at a nice time with the Reds starting to stack up a few injuries.
The midfield has been key to Forest’s good form, however, with Garner in exceptionally good form.
His latest outing for the England under-21s should give him some confidence and he’ll now hope to finish 2021/22 campaign with a flourish.
