Nottingham Forest are set to rival QPR and Preston North End to sign Newcastle United striker Elliot Anderson, according to the Sunday Mirror (03/04; page: 70). Other Championship clubs are likely to emerge as suitors too.

The young striker is currently on loan at Bristol Rovers in League Two. He has scored three goals and claimed three assists, with Joey Barton’s team eyeing up a promotion berth during 2021/22.

Anderson has a seemingly bright future with Newcastle but game time is needed for his development. With that in mind, it seems as though the Magpies will loan out their youngster again next season too.

Forest could find themselves in the market for a striker in the summer. Lewis Grabban, 34, will be out of contract; whilst Keinan Davis will probably return to Aston Villa at the end of his current spell with the Reds.

That will leave Sam Surridge and several options from the academy to spearhead Steve Cooper’s team. Of course, the caveat is that if Forest win promotion, they will likely seek a more proven performer than Newcastle gem Anderson.

Forest saw Grabban return to action at Blackpool on Saturday. He played okay from the bench, although he did watch on as Surridge bagged his third goal for the Reds with a well-taken finish.

Strategy: Anderson could be ideal for a new-look Forest

It has to be said that under CEO Dane Murphy and head coach Cooper, Forest’s transfer business looks far better and has more of an admirable approach.

No longer do the club try and pluck as many players as possible, from as many random different corners of Europe. Instead, players are signed with the future in mind and loanees are selected meticulously.

Each of the loan players in the squad this season has made an impact. With the current campaign still in the balance, Forest already have some plans in place for next season and Anderson might be ideal.
