Nottingham Forest are one of several Championship clubs eyeing a move for Cardiff goalkeeper Alex Smithies, according to Wales Online. The stopper is out of contract in the summer and could leave the Welsh strugglers for free.
The Reds could move for a goalkeeper, although it will likely signal the end of someone at Forest. Brice Samba, Ethan Horvath and Jordan Smith are all currently battling it out for the number one jersey on Trentside.
Smith has just signed a new contract, whilst Samba replaced Horvath in the team at Blackpool on Saturday. With a World Cup on the horizon, Horvath will want to be playing regularly and if he doesn’t get his place back a departure wouldn’t be surprising.
Smithies has been a regular in the Cardiff team this season. He has been Steve Morison’s chosen number one in what has proved a relative season of struggle for the Bluebirds.
The former Huddersfield and QPR goalkeeper has made 31 appearances for Cardiff during 2021/22, keeping five clean sheets in the process.
Smithies is a proven performer at Championship level and he’s unlikely to be short of suitors. The report does claim that several second-tier outfits will compete for his signature in the summer.
Smithies addition looks unlikely for Forest
This would seem like a bit of a strange one. He doesn’t really tick any boxes from Dane Murphy’s perspective and Cooper typically prefers younger players too.
If Horvath did decide to leave, however, there would be a need for a stopper. Smith has penned a new deal but he’s likely to be viewed as the third choice for now.
Smithies is a decent goalkeeper when it comes to playing in the Championship. He has made 334 second-tier outings and that level of experience might make him an ideal backup.
