Nottingham Forest defeated Coventry City 2-0 at the City Ground and in James Garner, the Reds have a player brimming with confidence.

The Manchester United youngster fired beyond Simon Moore in the second half to put the seal on a workmanlike performance.

Garner has grown as the season has progressed. He did take some time to get going when he first arrived for a second spell from Old Trafford.

He has enjoyed the run of games, however, and now there is no doubting whether or not he should be playing in Steve Cooper’s team.

Garner is a generational talent. He has now scored four goals and claimed six assists during 2021/22 and he’s integral to the way Forest try to play.

At 21-years-old the future looks incredibly bright. Interestingly, there’s an argument that he’s perhaps Manchester United’s best performing midfielder right now; given their struggles of late.

Garner first checked into Forest in January 2021. His remit then was to steer the Reds to safety following a poor run under Chris Hughton.

This time around, it looked as though it could be another season of struggle. Forest didn’t win any of the first three games Garner played and he must have been wondering whether he’d made a mistake coming back.

Under Cooper, he’s thrived though and last night he was fantastic.

Garner steals the show as Forest win again

Some statistics from Who Scored highlight exactly how good the youngster was for Forest during last night’s win over Coventry.

Garner made five key passes on the night and completed 87.5% of his 40 passes during the 90 minutes he was on the pitch.

He also made three tackles, four interceptions and one clearance on a night that saw him claim the Man of the Match from Who Scored.

For a young talent, he has a mature head on his shoulders, making him a player that looks tailor-made for the Premier League.

On current form, Garner might just help Forest join United in the top-flight before he departs the City Ground.
