Journalist Dean Jones has made a claim on Ranks FC that should rule Newcastle out of the race for Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.
The Reds will face stern competition to keep the forward during the summer after his 16 goals and 10 assists so far this season.
Forest rejected four bids from Brentford for Johnson in January. Now, Newcastle, West Ham, Leeds, Leicester and Tottenham are all thought to be keen.
Newcastle it seems, however, won’t be splashing the cash just yet; despite their newfound wealth from their Saudi Arabian takeover.
Jones told Ranks FC: “The one thing to look out for in terms of Newcastle is that they think they’re going to be scrutinised tougher than most clubs have been when put in this position.
“There is big money coming in and FFP are all over them.
“Don’t be surprised if some of their business is initially loan stuff just help them through the next couple of years.
“They have to manage the situation carefully and don’t want to get caught out.”
Newcastle are thought to have watched Johnson several times and were expected to move for him this summer.
These comments won’t make it easy though and naturally, Forest will want top whack for their prized asset.
Forest man Johnson should hold out for bigger than Newcastle
As Forest supporters, we’re slightly biased but Johnson is too good for Newcastle. Although they’ve picked up of late it still seems as though it could be a while before they challenge for European football.
Johnson is that good! He is quick, skilful and this season, he’s highlighted that he can also score a large number of goals if given the service.
The 20-year-old is destined for the very top of English football and with that in mind, Newcastle wouldn’t perhaps be the best move for him anyway.
