Another day another report about Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson. This time Football League World claims that the forward will sign a new contract with the Reds if they win promotion to the Premier League this season.
Johnson will have just a year remaining on his existing deal in the summer. A new contract will likely be discussed, although nobody really knows at this stage what is happening with the EFL Young Player of the Year.
The 20-year-old has been in fine form this season. He’s enjoyed his maiden campaign playing Championship football; scoring 16 goals and claiming 10 assists during the 2021/22 season.
Forest have secured a play-off place. Their automatic promotion hopes evaporated against Bournemouth on Tuesday; with the Cherries securing their place alongside Fulham in the Premier League next season.
Now, Football League World seem to imply that Johnson might be leaving in th summer if promotion isn’t secured. Previous reports, however, make claims to the contrary, with David Johnson part of the team handling negotiations.
Johnson has been linked with several clubs. Tottenham were the latest to be linked; whilst West Ham, Brentford, Newcastle and Leeds are also monitoring the forward’s contract situation at present.
Forest must get Johnson tied to new contract
Given his remarkable form, it won’t be easy to get Johnson to sign an extension. His contract situation is perilous and Forest will want a decent fee for him.
That said, he is playing regular football at the City Ground and at the moment that could count for a lot.
This latest report serves to prove that nobody really knows what is happening with a new contract for Johnson.
With Forest still having all to play for in their promotion quest, talks over any extension are likely to be on the backburner for now.
Once the season ends, however, Johnson’s future at Forest has to become an immediate priority.
