Nottingham Forest linked defender Joris Gnagnon is a free agent again after Saint-Etienne chose to release him from his contract.

The centre-back was linked with Forest back in 2019 when Sabri Lamouchi was finding his feet on Trentside.

Now, the 25-year-old is back on the market having been released by the French outfit Saint-Etienne.

He only signed for them on a free transfer during the January transfer window following a pretty drab time of things at Sevilla.

Big things were expected of the defender when he swapped Rennes for the La Liga outfit for a fee of £12 million in 2018.

He made just 17 appearances for Sevilla and never really held down a place in the senior ranks during his time at the club.

A move to Saint-Etienne was put in place for Gnagnon to rediscover his very best form but that hasn’t been the case.

He’s failed to play a single game for the club and spent some time turning out for the club’s reserve team to build up his fitness.

It’s uncertain what happens for Gnagnon next and it seems likely that he will have some options to choose from.

Forest linked with Gnagnon but they must avoid swooping for him now

There is clearly something amiss with Gnagnon given that he appears to be going through clubs at a quicker rate than Tiger Woods!

The centre-back was tipped as a really bright future a few years back but he’s been unable to truly fulfil his potential.

It does seem likely that Gnagnon will have some potential suitors but Forest must now park their interest.

The recruitment strategy has now changed at Forest in fairness and it’s unlikely that he will remain on the radar.

Gnagnon simply has to make his next move work but it seems unlikely that he will be moving to Forest any time soon.
