Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson is wanted by Leeds and according to Dean Jones, the Whites are in a great position to sign the player.
The 20-year-old notched his 17th goal of the season against Hull on Saturday and he’s also claimed 10 assists during the 2021/22 campaign.
Johnson is attracting lots of interest. Brentford saw four bids rejected in January; whilst Leeds are joined by Newcastle, West Ham, Leicester and Tottenham in the race to sign him.
Forest are in a bit of a sticky situation with regards to Johnson. His contract will have a year remaining in the summer and they could be forced into a sale.
Jones thinks that Leeds are in a nice position to sign him, although a couple of things will need to take place first.
He told Give Me Sport: “They should make him their number one target, 100%.
“They’re in a great position to sign Brennan Johnson if they do stay up and Forest don’t manage to get promoted.”
Johnson scored in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Hull. He will now hope to add to his goalscoring tally when Forest play Sheffield United in the play-offs.
Johnson wanted by Leeds but Forest must fight to keep him
It’s fair to say that a failure to come through the play-offs and win promotion would make life hard for Forest to keep him.
Right now, however, there’s an argument that the City Ground is the best place for his development.
Forest must try and get Johnson to sign a new contract if only to preserve his valuation for another year or two.
At the City Ground, he’s playing week in and week out. At this stage of his career that is paramount for his development.
Forest will hope to win promotion to the Premier League in the coming weeks. That would put all the speculation regarding the future of Johnson firmly to bed.
