Troy Deeney has told The Sun (Goals pullout, 07/05; page 9) that Nottingham Forest remind him of Manchester United ahead of next weekend’s play-off semi-final with Sheffield United.

The Reds will face the Blades over two legs with the winners earning a place in the showpiece final which takes place at Wembley later this month.

Forest have had some fine moments this season and sit top of the league when it comes to points won after Steve Cooper arrived.

Now, the real stuff starts and Forest must park their disappointment of not winning automatic promotion when next weekend comes around.

Deeney has been discussing the race for promotion. He’s been extremely complimentary towards the Reds and says that as a club then remind him of Manchester United.

He told The Sun (Goals pullout, 07/05; page 9): “Nottingham Forest remind me a bit of Manchester United in terms of a club that have not been the same since losing legendary long-term manager.

“There are still people at Forest who can reference the glory days of Brian Clough, just like Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Deeney is currently at Birmingham City and didn’t enjoy the best of 2021/22 campaigns, struggling to maintain his fitness.

Deeney says Forest remind him of Manchester United and perhaps he’s got a point

Clearly, United have been more successful than Forest but perhaps they’re not experiencing what the Reds did when Ferguson first left.

They’ve had a barren spell of late and it’s five years now since the Red Devils lifted any silverware.

Right now it’s an exciting time for the Forest faithful and they have at least two play-off games to look forward to.

It’s been several years since the Reds contested for a place in the Premier League and it’s a huge chance for Forest to grasp the opportunity this season.

Hopefully, Forest can be rubbing shoulders with United on the pitch next season.
