Nottingham Forest do want to sign Joe Rothwell but they remain behind Premier League-bound Bournemouth in the quest to sign him, according to The Athletic.
Sheffield United and West Brom are also in the mix to land the available player on a free transfer after he departed Blackburn.
Rothwell played in both games against Forest during 2021/22. The Reds were beaten 2-1 on Trentside when Chris Hughton was in charge but ran out 2-0 winners at Ewood Park.
The 27-year-old made 161 appearances for Rovers during his time at the club. He departs with several other big names likely to leave during the summer.
Rothwell was linked with Bournemouth during the January transfer window. Now, they lead the chase for his signature having secured promotion to the Premier League.
Forest are still in the mix though. The Reds don’t know which division they will be playing in next season just yet but a contract will be offered to Rothwell.
The former Manchester United trainee joined Blackburn from Oxford in 2018. Under Tony Mowbray, he quickly became an integral part of his midfield engine room.
Following a win for Rovers over Forest, he called the player a ‘super talent’ for his heroics during the win away from home.
Forest want Rothwell but signing him won’t be easy
This is a transfer that could quickly get away from Forest. With vast interest from the Premier League and clubs with parachute payments, it could boil down to salary.
Dane Murphy is trying hard to do things differently on Trentside. As a result, the Reds won’t be offering stupid money to the player and they could be forced to look elsewhere.
If Rothwell fancies playing every week, however, he should look no further than Forest. Steve Cooper likes the player a lot and he could prove the perfect partner to Ryan Yates.
