Nottingham Forest take on Sheffield United in the playoffs today – and the Blades have announced contract decisions over David McGoldrick and Ben Osborn.

Forest were able to sit back and watch Friday’s first semi-final between Luton Town and Huddersfield Town.

Today it’s their turn, heading to Bramall Lane this afternoon for the first leg against the Blades.

Steve Cooper will be looking for a positive result before heading back to the City Ground on Tuesday night.

There may be a former Forest player on show in Osborn, but teammate McGoldrick looks set to miss out through injury.

Both players have major ties to Forest.

Osborn came through the Forest ranks after leaving Derby County back in 2003.

Osborn then spent 16 years with Forest, racking up 230 appearances before leaving for Sheffield United in 2019.

Whilst naturally left-footed, Osborn has been turning out as a right wing back of late and could start today.

McGoldrick was born in Nottingham and whilst he started out with Notts County, he joined Forest from Southampton in 2009.

Goals were hard to come by for McGoldrick as he found the net just eight times in 63 league games for Forest.

Now 34, McGoldrick has been a mainstay of this Sheffield United side in recent years and even played 63 Premier League games for the Blades.

The injuries are starting to mount up though and McGoldrick hasn’t played for United since the 9th of February.

Sheffield United have now announced that McGoldrick will be leaving the club this summer.

The Blades are releasing McGoldrick, Lys Mousset and Luke Freeman but have extended Osborn’s contract by another year.

It seems strange to announce this news just hours before the playoff clash with Forest, with even some Blades fans seeming a little confused.

This may just give United a chance to give McGoldrick a big send-off in his final visit to Bramall Lane as a Blade though.

Forest will hope for some kind of distraction though as they chase a first-leg lead this afternoon.
