Nottingham Forest booked their place at Wembley on Tuesday night and last night the club’s iconic former striker Nigel Clough joined them!

His Mansfield Town side were desperately impressive as they defeated Northampton 1-0 at Sixfields to reach the final with a 3-1 victory.

Furthermore, it was a former Forest player who sealed last night’s win, with Stephen McLaughlin’s first-half goal starting the party for Mansfield supporters.

Clough has taken a similar route to Wembley was as Forest under Steve Cooper. In October, both the Stags and the Reds sat in the relegation zone of their respective divisions.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

Now, the two clubs are on their way back. Both Stags and Forest have enjoyed remarkable runs and can look forward to a day out at Wembley.

For Mansfield and Forest, the incentives are clear. Stags can join the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Ipswich and Charlton in League One; for Forest, they will hope to be rubbing shoulders with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea next season.

Clough has been there and done it before in the lower leagues. He’s won promotions with Burton Albion and he will have his team prepared for either Swindon or Port Vale in the final.

Forest fans will be hoping for double as Clough reaches Wembley

Plenty of Forest fans hold Mansfield in their thoughts. The town has a strong unit of Reds who travel to games and they keep an eye on the Stags’ fortunes.

The team have done superbly well to knock Northampton out. The Cobblers spent a lot of the season in third place but finished the season outside the automatic promotion places.

For Clough, he will know he has the backing of plenty of Forest fans. With 131 goals he sits second in the club’s list of all-time leading goalscorers.

Although he did manage Derby, the animosity towards him has eased since he left Pride Park.

Clough is Forest through and through and Mansfield fans will hope he can help the North Nottinghamshire-based team into League One next weekend.
