Former Nottingham Forest striker David Johnson has lauded Steve Cooper for his superb work this season.

Johnson has been at every Forest game this season, overseeing the fortunes of his son, Brennan who has been a Reds star.

The former talisman couldn’t get Forest over the line during his time as a player and tomorrow Johnson junior could become a hero.

Forest are 90 minutes away from a place in the Premier League and only Huddersfield stand in their way.

Johnson has been discussing the team’s fortunes during an interview ahead of Sunday’s match.

He thinks that Cooper deserves the praise for the work he’s done to get the team into the play-offs.

Johnson told Sky, via Nottinghamshire Live: “It’s been huge. Apart from Frank Clark, he is up there as one of the best. He has brought so much pride back to the city and the football club. We are sold out every week and he’s brought an identity back to Nottingham Forest.

“He’s got a mix of young and experienced players, everyone playing with a smile on their face. He has been the magician in all of this.”

Whatever happens tomorrow in the final, this season has been memorable for all the right reasons.

Forest need to finish the job against Huddersfield and if they do win it will be their first season in the top flight since 1999.

But, it’s worth remembering where they’ve come from. As recent as September the Reds were bottom of the division and seemingly heading for League One.

As a result, whatever happens tomorrow, the Reds deserve praise.

There will be plenty of reason to be cheerful even if Forest do lose tomorrow and the club looks in good hands for the future.

The work Cooper has done has been remarkable and he will hope to make it third time lucky on a personal level when it comes to the play-offs.
