Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow is a shock target for new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, according to The Sun.

The Magpies will offer the former Forest star as part of a deal to try and sign Dean Henderson.

The United backup could be allowed to leave this summer and with Lee Grant retiring, they will need another stopper.

Darlow, paid £30,000-a-week, is a proven Premier League performer and he would help United fulfil their homegrown quota.

The 31-year-old has been with Newcastle since leaving Forest in 2015.

He has made 99 appearances for the club, keeping 25 clean sheets, with most of his game time coming in the Championship.

In the Premier League, he has sometimes played second fiddle and currently, he’s behind Martin Dubravka in the pecking order.

With that in mind, a move to United might prove ideal.

David de Gea will remain the number one stopper next season but with Henderson likely to leave, Darlow will instantly become the number two.

United will scrap it out on four fronts next season and the ex-Forest man should get ample opportunities to play.

Darlow made 111 appearances for Forest and he will certainly welcome the chance to sign terms at Old Trafford.

This could be one of the most bizarre signings of the summer.

Very few would have predicted Darlow to be penning terms with United and this will definitely come as a shock to many.

The goalkeeper has been somewhat hit and miss at St James’ Park and that has robbed him of the chance to truly become the first-choice goalkeeper.

He will see a move to United as a huge chance.

Darlow should get some chances to play and certainly if Henderson leaves he will provide the backup to De Gea.

At Forest, the stopper replaced Lee Camp in the team when he departed for Norwich.

He was coming of age when Fawaz Al Hasawi sold him and Jamaal Lascelles to the Magpies; against the wishes of Stuart Pearce who was the manager at the time.

Forest will hope Darlow is coming to the City Ground next season with his new club.
