Nottingham Forest have won promotion to the Premier League – and Gary Lineker can’t wait to see the derby with Leicester City next season.

Forest headed to Wembley with dreams of finally returning to the Premier League after more than 20 years outside of the top flight.

Taking on a tough Huddersfield Town side was never going to be easy for Forest and it proved to be a very tight encounter.

Forest bagged the only goal of the game in the first half as Levi Colwill diverted James Garner’s shot into the net.

Forest weren’t pretty in the second half but they just about got the job done and can now celebrate promotion tonight.

Huddersfield can feel slightly aggrieved having had not one but two penalty appeals turned down in the second half.

Nothing was given even with VAR in play, so Forest won’t be bothered in the slightest about those appeals.

Forest didn’t offer all that much going forward but nobody cared when that final whistle was blown.

Forest fans, players and staff are in celebratory mood tonight and Gary Lineker has now offered his verdict.

Lineker took to Twitter straight after the game to congratulate Forest on promotion.

Unsurprisingly, Lineker immediately looked towards next season’s East Midlands derbies between Forest and his beloved Leicester City.

Lineker said the Premier League ‘finally’ has a proper derby game now and can’t wait to welcome Forest to Match of the Day next term.

Lineker may not want to be too excited about Forest v Leicester though.

Forest smashed Leicester 4-1 in the FA Cup back in February and would no doubt love to do it again next season.

With money in the bank from this promotion, Forest will be looking to strengthen this summer and give fans more days to remember against Leicester moving forward.
