Nottingham Forest are expected to match Tottenham’s bid for Middlesbrough star Djed Spence – but some of Europe’s elite are also showing big interest.

Make no bones about it, a bidding war is on the cards.

Spence was fantastic for Forest during 2021/22 and now promotion has been secured, the Reds would love to add him on a permanent basis.

It was claimed yesterday that Tottenham would bid around £17 million for the defender and that talks were advancing well.

Now, even Spurs are facing stiff competition for his signature.

It is being claimed by Football London that Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle and Brentford are all considering making bids for the 21-year-old.

Spence checked in at Forest during August of last year.

Initially, eyebrows were raised with many supporters of the belief that Forest didn’t need another right-sided defender.

Signing the youngster was a stroke of genius and he’s been brilliant throughout the campaign.

His link-up with Brennan Johnson on the right-hand side has been a joy to behold and the envy of the Championship.

Spence has been linked with Tottenham since the January transfer window.

They’re keen to add a right wing-back to their squad, with Antonio Conte a huge admirer of Spence.

Forest want Spence but they’re fighting a losing battle

The prospect of signing Spence on a permanent deal does look remote.

Who can blame the England under-21 international for wanting to head to Tottenham?

If he goes there he will join a squad brimming with quality and also one that is set to play in the Champions League next season.

First-team football is likely to be in his thoughts, however, and that’s where Forest could have hope.

Spence will want to play regularly next season and at Forest, provided he stays fit, he would be the first choice right wing-back.

He has been open about his admiration for Forest and said on countless occasions just how much he’s enjoyed his time at the club.

Now, Forest will hope that offering to make Spence a mainstay can persuade him to reject the advances of Tottenham.
