Tennis star Maria Sakkari has explained why she will be supporting Nottingham Forest in the Premier League next season.
Ahead of the Nottingham Open which started yesterday, Sakkari has been changing balls to discuss football instead.
The world number five came through her opening game in Nottingham.
She eased past Colombian player Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in straight sets to set up a clash with Canadian Rebecca Marino.
It turns out she’s a close follower of Forest due to being a fan of Olympiacos.
The Greek champions are also owned by Evangelos Marinakis and Sakkari has claimed it’s an exciting time for the club.
The 26-year-old told BBC Radio Nottingham: “Nottingham Forest. They’re owned by a Greek person who owns my team in Greece, Olympiacos. It’s a great connection and I will be supporting them next season.
“I’m excited because we have a lot of history in Greece but obviously the Premier League is different.
“I was happy and excited for them when I saw that they qualified and they’re in the Premier League now.”
Sakkari supporting Forest and Premier League puts them back on the map
It’s a big deal that Forest are now back in the top flight for the first time in 23 years.
Forest are a special football club and one steeped in tradition from top to bottom.
That doesn’t always guarantee your success and the Reds have had very little to shout about in recent years.
This year it’s their turn though and Sakkari’s comments offer an indication as to how exciting it is that Forest are on their way back.
The Reds are a club renowned throughout the world and being back in the Premier League should see plenty of overseas interest in the club.
Sakkari will hope to go well at the Nottingham Open before trying her luck at Wimbledon.
Next season she will undoubtedly be cheering on the Reds from afar.
