Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Nottingham Forest believe they’re still in pole position to sign Djed Spence from Middlesbrough.

Various other reports have claimed that Tottenham are leading the chase for his signature, although that might not be the case.

The Reds would dearly love to re-sign Spence. He was inspirational during 2021/22, making over 40 appearances and helping the club to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough are keen to secure a quick sale. Boss Chris Wilder would dearly love the funds in the kitty in order to fund his own recruitment drive.

Spence has other options other than Forest or Tottenham. Brentford, Everton, Newcastle and Bayern Munich have all watched him in action at the City Ground during 2021/22.

Jones is renowned for his expertise on transfer situations. He believes that as of yet nothing is clear but Forest believe they’re in th driving seat to sign Spence.

He told Give Me Sport: “Forest believe that they’re the frontrunners, but Tottenham want the chance to win him over.

“They don’t know where his head is at in this exact moment. I think by the middle of June, when things settle down, the window is opened and the internationals are out of the way they intend to find out where Spence’s mind is at.”

Forest believe they can sign Spence and fans will be delighted

A lot of the talk had seemed somewhat premature. Since helping Forest reach the Premier League, Spence has been locked away with the England under-21 team.

Naturally, his future will be resolved one way or another in the next few weeks. For now, however, anything written about Spence’s future is merely speculation.

Spence would dearly love to sign for Forest. He said as much after the win at Wembley and the challenge for the Reds now is beating off bigger clubs.

Spence could cost up to £20 million. Even if that is the fee that Forest have to pay, he’d still represent brilliant value for money during the summer transfer window.
