Last summer Sandro Kulenovic took the easy option and chose to reject a move to Nottingham Forest. Fast forward 12 months and the player must be kicking himself that he turned down Dane Murphy’s advances.

The Croatian made the excuse that he wanted to play in a top division. In reality, he chose to stay in the Croatian top flight where he knew he could score goals and wouldn’t be challenged too much.

It comes as no surprise that Kulenovic enjoyed his loan spell with NK Lokomotiva. He scored 11 goals and registered two assists from 33 games as the team finished fourth in the division.

The youngster was a big target of Murphy’s. In truth, Forest struggled to get their number one targets last summer, largely due to the post-pandemic hangover on the finances at plenty of clubs.

Still, a £2.5 million fee was agreed with Kulenovic with his parent club Dinamo Zagreb. They were keen to sell him but the player had other ideas.

After eight goals and seven assists at another Croatian top-flight outfit, the striker opted to stay put; citing that a move to play in a second-tier wasn’t right for him.

Now, his decision looks very silly. Forest are back in the Premier League and in signing on a permanent deal, the youngster could have been an integral part of that.

Kulenovic rejected Forest and he must be kicking himself

This one must really smart for the Croatian. He was offered the chance to take his career to a new level and he stayed put with his home comforts and opted for a league that comes as second nature to him.

As Forest prepare for their maiden campaign in the top-flight for 23 years, Kulenovic might be in limbo. He has two years to run on his existing deal but there’s no saying that he will be required back at Dinamo Zagreb.

Given that Kulenovic would have been a Murphy signing, there could still be some interest. That said, the club won’t have taken kindly to being rejected and will likely be targeting a better player now.

Kulenovic isn’t the only player in recent years that has rejected Forest. Like many before him, the striker must be absolutely gutted that he rejected a possible place in the Premier League.
