Despite intense speculation from Italian sources, it’s not believed that Domen Crnigoj is on the radar of Nottingham Forest this summer.

The reputable Will Unwin from The Guardian has dismissed the rumours on Twitter and Forest’s search for a midfielder goes on.

On Sunday it was claimed by Tuttosport that the Reds were very close to agreeing on terms with Crnigoj, with the player keen to come to England.

Now, it appears that the player who was relegated from Serie A with Venezia was never on the radar at the City Ground.

Forest are desperate for new midfielders to come into the club. Ryan Yates and Jack Colback are in place for next season, but after that, there is little else.

Cafu, Braian Ojeda and Tyrese Fornah all look short of Premier League quality and subsequently could head out on loan this summer.

Crnigoj would have provided the Reds with some competition for places; although it looks unlikely that he’d be a regular starter.

The Slovenia international made 37 appearances for the team that finished bottom of Serie A last season and Venezia now need to sell him.

Steve Cooper will likely target a more proven option for his engine room this summer as the Reds aim to compete in the Premier League.

As a result, Crnigoj is perhaps not the name that supporters would have hoped for anyway and Unwin’s update should go down well.

The 26-year-old looks like a midfielder that enjoyed the defensive side of the game more.

Last season he managed four goals and just one assist as Venezia were relegated to the second tier with nothing more than a whimper.

Crnigoj not on Forest radar and it’s probably for the best

The international’s confidence is likely to be on the floor after last season.

It proved a drab one from a Venezia perspective and as a result, Crnigoj could still be nursing some scars from the turbulent campaign.

Not only that but he’s hardly a renowned name in the world of football.

Forest don’t have to pursue players that everyone has heard of but this did smack of the type of signing that Ioannis Vrentzos has become accustomed to.

It seems unlikely that too many supporters will be worried that this deal is one that won’t be coming to fruition this summer.
