Nottingham Forest were linked with a shock move for former striker Ben Brereton Diaz following promotion to the Premier League. According to Football Italia, however, the player is set to sign for Serie A outfit Salernitana.

New sporting director Morgan De Sanctis is thought to be in London. He’s not expected to return to Italy without the paperwork that confirms Brereton Diaz as the club’s new player.

The Chile international enjoyed a fine 2021/22 campaign. He scored 22 goals in 38 games and finished as one of the division’s top goalscorers.

Brereton Diaz is also an established international for Chile. He has one year to run on his Ewood Park deal and Blackburn are cashing in on their 14-cap striker.

The 23-year-old arrived at Rovers for £7 million back in 2019. He took some time to get up to speed and many supporters didn’t fancy him when he first arrived.

A shock call-up for Chile seemed to change Brereton Diaz overnight. He established newfound confidence and began finding the net on a regular basis.

Brereton Diaz is likely to cost around £17 million if he moves this summer. As a result, the club stands to make a significant profit on the fee they paid Forest three years ago.

Leeds, Everton, Bournemouth and Forest were all thought to be in the race to sign the player. Now, his future looks to lie in Serie A beyond this summer.

Forest were linked with Brereton Diaz but losing out is no biggie

The former Reds academy graduate has certain attributes but Forest no longer need to push for his signature. Taiwo Awoniyi is arguably an upgrade and the Reds have forked out £17 million for the Nigerian this summer.

Brereton Diaz did also drop off somewhat during the second half of last season. Only two of his 22 goals scored during the campaign came after Christmas and that perhaps is a cause for concern.

Forest will be in the market for more players. Attackers will also be the order of the day but they don’t need another striker like Brereton Diaz now that Awoniyi has been added to the ranks.

Salernitana looks like an intriguing move for the striker. If he can find the net on a regular basis in Italy’s top-flight, he could be set for an even bigger move in the future.
