Nottingham Forest are eyeing a move for free agent defender Chancel Mbemba, according to Africa Foot United. The player will leave Porto tomorrow when his contract expires after four years with the Portuguese club.

Mbemba checked in at the Portuguese giants from Newcastle. During his time at Porto, he established himself in the first team and made 31 appearances as they won the league title during 2021/22.

The 27-year-old has bags of experience. He played 59 times during his time at Newcastle and 42 of those outings came in the Premier League.

Mbemba will have other parties interested. He’s a steady central defender and on a free transfer, he shouldn’t be short of suitors for his signature.

Forest will likely go in search of at least one central defender during the summer.

Joe Worrall, Scott McKenna and Steve Cook were the three regular defenders during the second half of 2021/22.

They’ll all probably get a chance to shine but Cook, in particular, might be viewed as a backup option instead.

Mbemba, 27, should be in his prime right now. As a result, it’s perhaps a surprise that he’s not signed a new deal at Porto yet.

Sergio Conceicao is actually keen to keep the central defender at the club. A deal can’t be struck between Mbemba and Porto, however, and he could walk away.

Forest eyeing Mbemba and he could be useful

Given that he’s seemingly been around for years, it’s hard to imagine that he’s still just 27.

He was largely decent for Newcastle and last season he was in fine form as he became a title-winner for the second time at Porto.

Mbemba is also an international. He’s played 66 times for the Democratic Republic of Congo and is now the captain of his country.

Dane Murphy does have set criteria when it comes to adding players and perhaps Mbemba doesn’t tick all of those boxes.

It’s fair to say that the uncompromising central defender could be a useful addition to the Reds’ ranks on a free transfer, however.

Rumour rating: 7/10 – Naturally, given that Joe Rodon and Jamaal Lascelles have been linked, some supporters might turn their noses up at this.

Mbemba is a very competent defender though and last season he spent time playing in the Champions League.

With McKenna and Worrall likely to keep their places next season, there is only really one spot up for grabs.

That might make it difficult for Forest to fork out for someone of Rodon’s ilk and Mbemba on a free might prove a very decent free transfer for the club.
