Taiwo Awoniyi’s former teammate Moussa Niakhate is set to undergo a medical at Nottingham Forest imminently, David Ornstein has confirmed.
The Reds have finally agreed on terms with Mainz, just weeks after it appeared that a deal might be dead in the water.
Forest will part with £10 million for Niakhate with the package including a further £5 million in the way of add-ons.
If all goes according to plan, the 26-year-old will link up with his new teammates at their training camp in Spain.
Forest have worked hard to get this deal over the line. Their first offer for the Mainz captain was rejected and it was feared the deal would be off.
Niakhate has been with the Bundesliga outfit for four years and for the last 18 months he’s worn the armband.
This looks like a seriously good piece of business by Forest.
Niakhate is a left-sided defender and he can also play as a wing-back as well as in his natural central defensive role.
They weren’t quite as serious as Forest though and Steve Cooper has won the race for the defender.
Niakhate’s signing is now subject to a medical but this should be completed very quickly.
Awoniyi was a teammate of Niakhate and that could help Forest duo
The pair played together during the 2019/20 campaign and that should be useful.
It’s never easy coming to a new country but having a familiar face in the dressing room might help Niakhate settle.
Having lost all of last season’s loan stars, Steve Cooper will hope to create a similar togetherness with his new players.
That’s not always an easy thing to do but both Awoniyi and Niakhate could see their form take off as a result of being in the same dressing room once more.
The 26-year-old looks like a quality signing for Forest.
He is strong in the tackle, loves to burst forward with the ball and also wins plenty of aerial challenges.
Only time will tell but Forest might have hit the jackpot with this shrewd capture.
