Nottingham Forest were bizarrely linked with a move for Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico but they look set to miss out.

According to Sky Sports, the Reds and Brighton were among the clubs to ask about Tagliafico who is now on the radar of Barcelona.

The 29-year-old holds a desire to play in the Champions League and obviously, the interested Premier League outfits can’t offer that.

Barcelona have previously shown an interest in landing the left-sided wing-back.

They thought a deal would be struck in January but Ajax pulled out of the deal to sell their Argentinean performer.

Forest have quickly moved on to other targets.

Harry Toffolo is expected to join from Huddersfield; whilst Bayern Munich outcast Omar Richards looks like being a primary target.

Tagliafico was always nothing more than a pipedream.

Although he’s only set to cost around £4 million, he earns £44,000-a-week and is likely to demand a pay rise when he leaves Ajax.

Tagliafico has made 167 appearances for the Dutch champions since arriving from Independiente.

He’s become a fan favourite and has enjoyed some memorable nights domestically and in the Champions League.

Forest linked to Tagliafico but Barcelona move makes sense

The Catalans are keen to tighten the purse strings a little bit and that makes this signing rather savvy.

Barca are in need of a left-back and Tagliafico is a player that clearly wants to play for them.

Forest would have loved the 40-cap player at the City Ground. He’d have been a remarkable coup and something of a statement signing.

Tagliafico arriving would have sent a message but it did always look a longshot.

It’s good to see the Reds being ambitious in the market though and hopefully, a stellar signing or two can still be made.

Forest still have lots to do in the window but Tagliafico is one to scrub off the list.
