Nottingham Forest are set to complete the signing of Neco Williams from Liverpool. The 21-year-old has posted an emotional message on Instagram this morning ahead of being announced as a new Reds addition.
Forest have moved quickly to replace Djed Spence. Another option is likely to be sought for the right-sided wing-back role but Williams should be the first choice.
The player has decided to leave Liverpool after 15 years at Anfield. He made 33 appearances for Liverpool and claimed a winners medal in 2020 when they claimed a first Premier League crown.
Williams has now prioritised regular game time over trophies. Forest’s aim in the short-term is to establish themselves as a Premier League club once again.
It was claimed over the weekend that this deal was close. Goal suggested yesterday that a £16 million deal with add-ons was approved subject to a medical.
Now, Williams’ message on social media suggests that he’s set to sign on the dotted line, with Forest set to win the race for his signature.
One factor in the defender choosing to leave this summer is the World Cup. Wales will take part in the finals for the first time since 1958 and Williams will hope to add to his 21 caps.
Forest set to complete signing of Williams
This looks like a pretty good piece of business. Williams spent the second half of last season at Fulham, scoring twice and claiming two assists in 15 appearances.
The Liverpool man is perhaps a bit different to Spence. He’s not quite as quick as the former Reds loanee but he does have a superb delivery on him.
Cooper will perhaps have to mould him into a wing-back. A large number of his games have come as a full-back, although Rob Page has demanded he get forward more on the international stage.
This looks like a sensible piece of business from a Forest perspective. He is young, capable and crucially he’s at the age where he will retain some sell-on value.
