Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper explained last night that Ryan Yates will be missing through injury for a month.

It’s a devastating blow for Forest and now highlights just how much work they have to do in the transfer market.

Yates was instrumental during 2021/22 and bagged nine goals during a campaign in which Forest won promotion.

The 24-year-old often divides opinion but last season even his fiercest critics were forced into backtracking.

Steve Cooper was defiant when quizzed on transfers after last night’s 1-0 pre-season win over Burton Albion.

Despite adding six players to his squad so far, he reiterated the need for more new faces to arrive.

After the game, he told BBC Radio Nottingham: “There will be more signing, of course, there will be…there has to be.”

The immediate focus will now be focused on strengthening in midfield. It’s impossible to underestimate just how important Yates was last season.

He was a mainstay in the team under Steve Cooper and he perhaps offers something that the other midfielders don’t.

Jack Colback could also be a useful player next season but after that, there really isn’t a lot else.

Cafu is backup at best, whilst Braian Ojeda looks likely to head out on loan next season.

That makes Forest’s need for midfield reinforcements paramount. They really can’t delay and at least two options for the engine room will be required.

Devastating Yates blow leaves Forest in urgent state

The sooner Forest can sign a midfielder the more relaxed everyone associated with the club will be.

Lewis O’Brien is thought to be close to signing from Huddersfield and he would certainly represent a good start.

Another player will be needed though. Yates will miss the entire pre-season campaign and that will see him lacking match practice when he does return.

It’s hard to imagine either Cafu or Ojeda doing a job consistently in the Premier League and depth is definitely required.

Yates’ injury comes at a really unfortunate time. With that in mind, Forest must now get busy to ensure they don’t miss their integral midfield player.
