West Ham could get their own back on Nottingham Forest by beating them to the signing of Maxwel Cornet.

The Hammers fans went into meltdown last week when Forest pipped them to the signing of Jesse Lingard.

It seems as though West Ham thought they had enough to sign the 29-year-old but he chose the project at Forest.

David Moyes is now back to the drawing board and he will be desperately scouring the market for new players.

One man who will surely welcome the chance to sign for West Ham is Burnley star Cornet.

Some reports have emerged this week that the Clarets will only sell the Frenchman if his £17.5 million is paid in one fell swoop.

So far, Everton and Fulham have offered to take the player on loan with an option to buy him next summer.

That simply won’t do. West Ham are still keen, along with Forest, but it’s Moyes who likely has the aces.

Cornet is desperate to play for a team in European competition and the Hammers can offer that.

Okay, they will only take part in the UEFA Conference League during 2022/23 but it’s more than Forest have on the table.

The Reds might miss out on Cornet, although he does want a decision made on his future fairly soon.

The Hammers faithful have been the subject of vast hysteria in recent weeks.

They can’t believe that little old Forest would win promotion and then dare to have a go at staying in the division.

It seems unfathomable to them that Lingard would turn down West Ham for the project, and salary, on offer at Forest.

Forest fans have been amused with how salty the Hammers fan base have got with the whole debacle and frankly, it’s been quite childish.

The Hammers are a massive football club and they shouldn’t have any issues attracting players.

For Cornet, he wants his future sorting. The Championship season gets underway on Friday night and ideally, he will get hooked up before then.

Given that he wants to play in Europe, it looks as though West Ham could win this race.

If they do, they will get one over on Forest, with Cornet high on Steve Cooper’s list following promotion to the Premier League.
