Nottingham Forest are still interested in bringing Manchester United man James Garner to the City Ground.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have placed the 21-year-old on their four-man shortlist ahead of the new campaign.

Forest head coach Steve Cooper still wants to sign another midfielder and Garner is on the radar.

The other three players are William Carvalho, Ibrahim Sangare and Anton Stach.

Garner is a player who would need no introduction to Forest supporters following his 18-month loan.

The United man picked up an injury to start pre-season and has struggled for game time on the tour of Australia.

He’s facing a battle to prove himself to Erik ten Hag ahead of next weekend’s big kick-off and a departure could take place.

Forest won’t be allowed to loan Garner for a third time this summer.

The Reds have already taken Dean Henderson on loan from United. As a result, Premier League rules stop them from taking another Red Devils player on loan.

Forest won’t walk away from Garner though and Cooper wants to bring him back to the club.

The England under-21 international made 69 appearances for the Reds, scoring eight goals and claiming 10 assists.

His most famous assist came in the Championship play-off final. His teasing ball was turned into his own net by Huddersfield defender Levi Colwill.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously praised the midfielder. He called him a ‘top player’ following some heroics out on loan at Forest.

Forest still interested in Garner

It has to be said that Garner probably isn’t top of the Reds’ shortlist, although that’s nothing to do with how Forest value him.

The player is a class act and his potential has a considerably high ceiling.

Ultimately, the stumbling block is that United will likely be unwilling to cash in on Garner just yet.

As a result, another loan could be on the agenda and that will rule Forest out of the race.

If a deal could be struck to sign him permanently it could be a tremendous piece of business for the Reds.

Garner would be a popular signing in the eyes of supporters but tempting United into a sale will prove tricky.
