Nottingham Forest are considering signing former Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, according to Foot Mercato. The Reds are looking to try and bolster their midfield ranks ahead of the deadline at the end of the month.

The Reds lost 2-0 in their first Premier League game for 23 years. Newcastle gave them a stern test at St James’ Park and clearly, Steve Cooper still has work to do on his squad.

The 32-year-old left Palace at the end of his contract. He had spent four years at Selhurst Park but Patrick Vieira opted not to hand him a new deal to stay at the club.

Given his vast experience, it’s perhaps a surprise not to see someone snap him up yet this summer. He has 258 Premier League appearances to his name and Forest would welcome that level of expertise.

Kouyate is being eyed by Forest as they aim to complete their midfield ranks. Orel Mangala and Lewis O’Brien have both been added to the ranks but Cooper wants a defensive enforcer in the squad.

When he was at Palace he earned praise from Scott Dann. He called his teammate a ‘top player’ and his importance was there for all to see whenever he was called upon.

The Senegalese star would arrive at Forest without having taken part in a proper pre-season. With that in mind, could getting up to speed in the Premier League take more time than the Reds have?

The 82-cap international tasted success on the international stage last season. He helped Senegal win the African Cup of Nations and was a regular throughout the competition.

Clearly, the midfielder would welcome a return to the Premier League. Whether he’s the right player that Forest need right now though will remain to be seen.

Rumour rating: 7/10 – There are pros and cons with this potential deal and Forest should perhaps tread with some caution.

The Reds could welcome another midfield option and perhaps Kouyate is the battering ram of a signing that they need.

Forest do perhaps need another ball-playing midfielder too though and it will be interesting to see how the club plays this one.
