Nottingham Forest winger Alex Mighten is wanted by Belgian outfit Standard Liege, according to Voetbal Primeur. The youngster came off the bench as a late substitute in Saturday’s defeat against Newcastle.

Mighten could still be allowed to leave on loan this month though. The club are hoping to do some more transfer business and if they get the players they crave, the academy graduate could be surplus.

Steve Cooper will want to ensure his squad is well-stocked. Last night, news emerged that the Reds have agreed on a fee with Real Betis for versatile performer Alex Moreno.

Mighten made 27 appearances last season but just six of those outings came as a starter. Cooper was expected to get the best out of the 20-year-old but so far he’s not viewed him as a first-team regular.

Liege have made an indifferent start to the 2022/23 campaign. They’ve got four points from three games; winning one, drawing one and losing the other as they bid to improve on last season.

Last season the Belgian outfit badly lost their way. They finished 14th in the Belgian top-flight and that’s not really acceptable for a club that has a higher expectation among the fan base.

This would be an interesting, albeit shocking, deal for Mighten. A loan move would certainly do him good but perhaps a Championship deal was to be expected.

Mighten can clearly play. A lack of game time has, however, seen him become short on confidence and a move to play regular football would be just perfect.

The Reds need a couple more attacking players. As a result, Forest would be wise to get Mighten out on loan and make sure his development doesn’t stall this season.

The Belgian top-flight would give him the perfect chance to play regularly. He would get decent exposure to first-team football and it could help kick on next season.

Gary Brazil is a big fan of Mighten. He raved about the player when he penned a fresh contract back in August 2022, calling him ‘exciting’ and backing him to become an ‘elite’ player.
