Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks to sign former Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, according to Football Insider. The Reds were linked with the player over the weekend and a deal appears close.

Kouyate didn’t extend his contract with Palace at the end of last season. He’s now a free agent and the 32-year-old is thought to be considering a move to Forest before the transfer window slams shut next month.

The proven Premier League midfielder has lots of experience. He made 141 appearances for Palace and prior to joining them, he played 147 times for West Ham.

Kouyate has also played 82 times for Senegal. Earlier this year he achieved the most memorable moment of his career by helping his country with the African Cup of Nations.

Now, Kouyate is on the lookout for a new club and he could earn a stay in the Premier League. Forest were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle on Saturday and that highlighted a need for more players.

The tough-tackling midfielder was a regular under Patrick Vieira last season. He made 31 appearances for the Eagles and helped them achieve a 12th-placed finish.

Former teammate Scott Dann previously called Kouyate a ‘top player’ and he’d be a welcome addition to the midfield engine room at Forest.

Think Samba Sow, then think more robust, not injured as often and oozing a little bit more class on the ball. That will bring you to Kouyate and Forest would be wise to get this one done.

The midfield warrior would be a very useful addition to the ranks. He’d bring some strong positional sense and also add some steel to the midfield ranks.

Forest were overrun in midfield on Saturday and that won’t have gone unnoticed in the eyes of Cooper. Kouyate has now been identified and perhaps this one is close.

The Reds would probably be done in the midfield area if this deal gets over the line. Lewis O’Brien and Orel Mangala have already been signed this summer, with Ryan Yates also to return from injury.
