Nottingham Forest have reportedly made a bid for PSV winger Cody Gakpo but now Manchester United are keen on signing the Dutchman. According to Jason Burt of The Telegraph, Old Trafford is now a realistic option for the player.
Gakpo was in action last night as PSV booked a date with Rangers in the final stages of qualifying for the Champions League. The Dutch outfit defeated Monaco on aggregate to progress to the final round prior to the group stages.
It’s been a pretty good 12 months for the left-sided winger. During 2021/22 he scored 21 goals and laid on a further 15 goals as PSV finished the campaign in second place in the Eredivisie.
Gakpo has attracted the attention of several clubs this summer. Leeds have been linked and it was claimed over the weekend that Forest are prepared to pay a sizeable transfer fee to secure the services of the top talent.
The Reds are desperate to strengthen their attacking ranks this summer. Steve Cooper is a few players light going forward and that was highlighted with a toothless performance against Newcastle on Saturday.
Gakpo has previously been praised by former Holland midfielder Theo Janssen. He told NOS: “The boy has everything. I really enjoy him and he’s going to be an important player.”
Manchester United keen on signing Gakpo
It goes without saying that this isn’t good news for Forest. The Red Devils are in a bit of a pickle at the moment but naturally, a player like Gakpo would dearly love to play for United.
Erik ten Hag has come from the Dutch league and he knows who all the top talents are. Gakpo is one of those and naturally, he’d benefit from playing under the new United boss.
Gakpo is a mature head on young shoulders. He has already captained the PSV senior ranks and naturally, that highlights superb leadership skills.
This latest update might make it back to the drawing board for Forest. They need some attackers but it could be a case of next man on the list for the recruitment team.
