Dermot Gallagher and Stephen Warnock have clashed live on Sky Sports News over Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna. The Scotland international gave away a penalty in the second half, with referee Rob Jones choosing to show him a yellow card.

Forest stood firm and Dean Henderson saved Declan Rice’s attempt from 12 yards. Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal proved decisive as the Reds secured a massive victory to go 10th in the Premier League.

Both Gallagher and Warnock had their say on the decision not to send McKenna off. The pair shared their views on today’s edition of Ref Watch which aired live on Sky Sports News.

The pair clashed, with the former Premier League referee believing the call to be correct, and ex-Liverpool defender feeling that the official got the decision wrong.

Gallagher felt that referee Jones made the right calling, saying live on Sky Sports News: “I think that was a perfect scenario for what VAR is for. The keeper is set behind McKenna and VAR allows the referee to see that it’s handball but that Henderson is set to make the save. I think a yellow card is the right call.”

Warnock disagreed, saying: “No, I don’t agree with that. If you dive in the box to prevent a possible goal, it should be a red card. There’s absolutely no guarantee that Henderson makes that save.”

It’s easy to see how Warnock can believe this should have been red. Ultimately there is no guarantee that Henderson would have saved it but he was set in a strong position behind him.

Gallagher knows refereeing like the back of his hand. He reffed for several years in the Premier League and he’s well versed to have his spot on the Sky Sports News show on Monday mornings.

McKenna might have got a little bit lucky. Another referee, on another afternoon, might have chosen to show him a red card rather than the yellow he received.

Forest won’t be too bothered. The Reds needed to get off the mark quickly at home and this win should given the team a massive amount of confidence going forward.
