Tottenham are set to beat Nottingham Forest to the singing of Atalanta playmaker Ruslan Malinovskyi, according to Tutto Atalanta. The Reds were linked with a move for the Ukrainian shortly after Remo Freuler headed to England to sign for the Forest.

Malinovskyi now looks set for the Premier League. Tottenham have fought off competition to land the player who has been playing for Atalanta since 2019 when he checked in from Genk.

Forest don’t appear to have a status that appeals to Malinovskyi. He is keen to join a more important club in the English game and clearly, Tottenham will be fancied to do well this season.

Malinovskyi typically plays as a number 10. He’s left-footed and is renowned for being a sound free-kick taker. During his career, he’s scored 16 times directly from those kinds of dead ball situations.

At this stage, it’s not clear how much Malinovskyi will cost. He does have just under a year left on his contract though and that will tempt Atalanta into a sale before the transfer window closes.

The 29-year-old also lists Shakhtar Donetsk and Zorya Luhansk among his former clubs. He’s also played 49 times for his country and found the net seven times in the famous yellow and blue.

Tottenham have a decent history of signing players from Italy. Fabio Paratici is in place as the club’s sporting director and they’ve had some success with players from Serie A in recent years.

This always seemed like it might be a long shot. At 29, the playmaker will be desperate to play for another big club and Tottenham can offer Champions League football.

Malinovskyi would have been a useful signing for Forest. He takes a wonderful set-piece and as a left-footer, he’d add some balance to the Forest attaching unit.

Forest will still be in search of one or two more players for the final third of the pitch. One to scrub off the list now could be Malinovskyi as a move to Tottenham looks to be on the cards.
