Nottingham Forest are no longer in the race to sign Lyon star Houssem Aouar with Morgan Gibbs-White set to sign for the club.
A report from Foot Mercato has tried to deliver some information on why the deal broke down.
Forest were set to send out a message to the Premier League by signing a player who has been called ‘incredible’ by Pep Guardiola.
Aouar has been with Lyon for his whole career having risen through the youth ranks with the Ligue 1 outfit.
The 24-year-old has played over 200 times for his current club and has also made one appearance for France.
Aouar could still leave this summer, with Premier League outfit Crystal Palace now on the radar.
It would appear that Forest came close to landing Aouar but Lyon’s behaviour didn’t exactly blow the Reds’ hierarchy away.
Forest tried hard to sign him. After a first bid was rejected, they were told how much it would take to sign him.
The Reds then offered that amount and the director of football. Vincent Ponsot moved the goalposts once again.
Forest have agreed they won’t be held at ransom by any club this summer and that led them to open Gibbs-White negotiations once again.
Forest pull out of Aouar race
It’s not really clear what Lyon are hoping to receive for their star man but it’s unlikely he will join Forest now.
The Reds look quite well stocked in the middle of the pitch now, with Gibbs-White to push Jesse Lingard for the number 10 spot.
The £62,000-a-week Aouar would have been an exciting addition but there are also reasons to be cheerful with the new man from Wolves.
He is Steve Cooper’s number one target and furthermore, he’s unlikely to view the club as the stepping stone that Aouar would have.
It’s a shame that Forest couldn’t land a player who has clearly got some world-class tendencies.
Supporters will be happy with Gibbs-White though and in the next few years, he could prove to be a tremendous signing.
