Steve Sutton has lauded Ryan Yates live on BBC Radio Nottingham following his goal for Nottingham Forest last night.

The Reds defeated Grimsby Town 3-0 at Blundell Park thanks to Yates’ striker and a brace from Sam Surridge.

The 24-year-old captained the side in the absence of Joe Worrall who was given the night off.

He was named as the official vice-captain earlier this summer and it’s a role that he’s tailor-made to do.

The boyhood Forest fan takes a lot of pride in playing for the Reds and his goal against Grimsby was a thing of beauty.

After some good work from Emmanuel Dennis, he was teed up from the right-hand side and whacked an unstoppable effort into the net.

Sutton was on co-commentary at Blundell Park and he praised Yates after his moment of magic.

He said live on air: “That was a fantastic effort, his football have been up around his waist. It wasn’t the easiest ball to deal with but he absolutely hammered that.”

Yates will be delighted to start a game once more having missed the start of the season with a knee problem.

He bleeds Forest and the midfielder now faces a big challenge to get his place back in the team.

Lewis O’Brien and Orel Mangala are currently in possession of the shirts and it’ll be interesting to see what Steve Cooper has planned for Yates.

This was vintage Yates. A calm and composed presence and a player who did a useful job dropping into centre-back when called upon in the second half.

The challenge for Yates now is to stay working hard and try and force his way into the reckoning for the Premier League campaign.

O’Brien and Mangala have been brilliant in the last two games. With that in mind, they will surely be favourites to start against Tottenham on Sunday.

Yates has been praised on several occasions by Cooper. As a result, it seems likely he will get a chance at some point this season.

Last night saw him star against a League Two side but it was a welcome return to the starting eleven for Yates.
