Atletico Madrid are set to replace Renan Lodi by signing Nottingham Forest-linked defender Sergio Reguilon. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Spanish defender will be due in Madrid later today to pen his deal.

The Tottenham man has fallen down the pecking order under Antonio Conte. He hasn’t featured for Spurs this season and will now be allowed to leave the club before the window closes on Thursday.

Madrid have moved quickly to replace Reguilon. Lodi checked in at Forest shortly before the Reds went down 2-0 to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

The 25-year-old was in the sights of Forest before they picked up the Brazilian. Forest had been keen to add another left-sided wing-back option with Omar Richards nursing an injury.

Reguilon has been with Tottenham since 2020 when he checked in from Real Madrid. He made 67 appearances for Tottenham but hasn’t been fancied by Conte this season.

Now he will head to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan. He is undergoing medical tests and will pen a deal until the end of the campaign.

Reguilon would have been a useful loan signing for Forest. However, in signing Lodi, the Reds have included a deal worth £25 million to sign him permanently.

Had Forest landed Reguilon, it’d have been a straight loan with no permanent option and clearly, Forest didn’t want to go for that.

Madrid replace Lodi by signing Reguilon

It’s hard not to think that Forest have got the better deal out of the two clubs here. Lodi is currently Brazil’s left-back, whilst Reguilon isn’t even the first choice at Tottenham.

Reguilon also earns £68,000-a-week at Tottenham and taking on this wages wouldn’t have been great from a business sense.

The Spain international has lost his way at Tottenham a little bit and he will head to Madrid with a point to prove.

It’s perhaps a bizarre turn of events that the Reds have managed to get Lodi, making way for Atletico to sign another Forest target in Reguilon.

Lodi could prove to be the best piece of business that Forest complete all summer long. Certainly, he looks a safer signing than the Tottenham man would have done.
