Nottingham Forest made a truly unbelievable attempt to sign Paulo Dybala on a free transfer this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

It’s probably easier to list the players Forest weren’t linked with in a truly crazy summer.

Forest racked up more than 20 signings after winning promotion to the Premier League, almost completely overhauling Steve Cooper’s squad.

Some names like Amadou Onana, Cheick Doucoure and Michy Batshuayi slipped through the net, and you can now add Paulo Dybala to that list.

Nottingham Forest wanted Paulo Dybala

We have heard some truly mental rumours about Forest over the last few months but this one may sit at the top of the pile.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed on The Here We Go podcast that Forest explored a potential deal to sign Paulo Dybala on a free transfer.

We know Evangelos Marinakis is ambitious but that would have been quite staggering.

Romano claims that when Dybala’s Juventus contract came to an end this summer, Forest made a call to try and sign him.

It’s suggested that Forest joined Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli in the race to sign Dybala, but a move to the City Ground just wasn’t possible.

Roma ended up winning that race, ruling out what could have been the signing of a lifetime for Forest.

“Nottingham Forest also did a call for Paulo Dybala on a free,” said Romano. “Yes, they tried! If you remember at one point, Dybala was Inter but not closed, Roma but not agreed, Napoli but no agreement, so there were many possibilities and they tried to explore this possibility, saying ‘okay, what’s the situation with Dybala?’. This shows the ambition of Nottingham Forest, but in the end it was impossible. It was just a call and not a negotiation,” he added.

Dybala, 28, is one of the big names in European football and racked up 115 goals in 293 games for Juventus.

The Argentina international – with 34 caps for his country – has been a superstar for many years now.

Forest clearly felt they had a chance at luring Dybala to England, but Jose Mourinho won the race by luring him to Roma.

Forest did complete a big-name signing in Jesse Lingard, but Marinakis and co seemingly eyed up Dybala to play that number 10 roel at the City Ground.

That would have taken a bonkers summer to another level for Forest, but Dybala to Forest will have to stay as a PlayStation dream for now.
