The Reds were powerless to prevent the defender from joining Spurs in the summer, with his heart set on a move to North London.
Forest moved quickly to sign Neco Williams as his replacement and eventually Spence joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough.
The 21-year-old’s move to Spurs hasn’t quite gone according to plan just yet, with Antonio Conte viewing him as one for the future.
He’s made no secret of the fact that Spence will be viewed as one for the future and he wasn’t chosen by Conte.
That puts doubt over how much football the Forest promotion winner will play this season.
Gold covers Tottenham for Football London and he has made an interesting claim on his YouTube channel about the former Reds star.
He said: “Spence is one who the club feel fit both Conte and the club. And Conte’s made it very clear that the club wanted Djed Spence.
“I was told this very clearly that Spence wasn’t a player that Spurs would have bought under any other manager. He just ticks every box Conte wants in a wing-back.”
Gold has made an interesting Spence claim
The situation surrounding Spence will be enough to break the hearts of Nottingham Forest supporters.
It doesn’t seem five minutes ago since the defender was in tears on the Wembley turf celebrating promotion with Forest.
Now, he’s not even training regularly with the Tottenham first-team and is facing a real fight to get into the team.
Conte has made little attempt to try and ease any worries Spence might have and it looks set to be a long season.
Forest would have dearly loved to have signed the youngster on a permanent basis.
Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that an option to buy should be included in every loan where possible.
Boro can’t have imagined the impact that Spence would make at Forest. In the end, he earned them a tidy sum.
For Spence, all he can do is work hard and pray that he gets a chance at some point this season.
