Sky Sports co-commentator Alan Smith made a claim about Nottingham Forest star Jesse Lingard live on air in the 58th minute of tonight’s defeat to Leicester.

The Reds were battered once again after a James Maddison masterclass saw them 3-0 down at the half-time interval.

Steve Cooper is possibly hanging onto his job by a thread. It shouldn’t be that way but the club’s hierarchy will demand success.

Lingard started the game having been placed on the bench for the 3-2 defeat against Fulham last time out.

The 29-year-old didn’t have his best game and it was his error that led to Leicester opening the scoring.

Smith felt that there were some glimpses of his quality. He did confess, however, it was a struggle for the ex-Manchester United man.

He said live on Sky Sports during the 58th minute: “He showed a few nice touches a few moments ago in the second half.

“Ultimately though, it’s been a struggle for him to have any impact on the game tonight.”

Lingard penned a one-year contract at the City Ground back in July.

He rejected the advances of West Ham where he had a successful loan spell during the 2020/21 campaign.

Lingard has been capped 32 times by England and there is some hope that he can help Forest move in the right direction this season.

Smith claim about Lingard is spot on

It’s not entirely his fault of course, but his error that led to the first goal is one he needs to forget quickly.

He did settle a little more in the second half and Forest must find a way to get him involved a bit more.

Lingard won’t be happy with his performances to date. He will be desperate to start justifying the salary he’s on and fast.

The player didn’t do a lot of pre-season but with the season now eight games old, he really has to start getting up to speed quickly in the coming weeks.
