Football London journalist Alasdair Gold has joked that goalkeeper Fraser Forster is ahead of ex-Nottingham Forest man Djed Spence in the Tottenham pecking order.

The 22-year-old was overlooked once again on Saturday; with Spurs losing the North London-derby 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Antonio Conte made all five substitutes yet didn’t call upon Spence, despite having right-sided wing-back Emerson Royal sent off during the game.

Spence’s dream move is turning into a nightmare. After playing 44 games last season, the youngster will have fancied playing regular football again this season.

He was a pivotal part of Steve Cooper’s promotion-winning team. The player never entertained a permanent move to the City Ground, however, preferring to join Spurs.

Shortly after signing for Tottenham, it became clear things might be tricky. Conte claimed it was the club that wanted to sign him and not one of his decisions.

Now, Gold believes that Spence remains down the pecking order despite Royal set to be unavailable for three Premier League games.

He told his YouTube channel: “For me, the right back pecking order goes Perisic, Doherty, then, it’s any other winger that Conte can turn into a right-back.

“After that, you’d probably say that Fraser Forster will be whipping the gloves off and playing right wing-back, with Spence even further down than that.

“That might sound a little harsh but I think supporters who think Royal’s absence will be good news for Spence might be disappointed.”

Gold has joked about Spence but it’s no laughing matter

If the former Forest man can’t get a game when the player who operates in his position is sent off, the signs look ominous.

It’s hard to imagine Spence remaining at the club all season and a loan move could be on the cards for January.

Forest did replace Spence well. Neco Williams signed from Liverpool, whilst the experienced Serge Aurier has also been added to the ranks.

Spence will forever be worshipped by supporters, however, and it’d be interesting to see if the player was courted by Forest should he become available.
