Steve Cooper has been handed a stay of execution at Nottingham Forest and will remain in charge against Aston Villa.

According to The Telegraph, the club’s hierarchy voted unanimously to save the Welsh incumbent.

Cooper led the team to promotion last season, despite the Reds sitting bottom of the Championship when he took over.

The 42-year-old has come under fire after a poor start to life back in the Premier League, however.

He saw his side thrashed 4-0 against Leicester on Monday and five straight defeats aren’t good enough.

It’s hard not to feel some sympathy for the Reds boss.

He was handed 22 new players in the summer, with Cooper tasked with getting them playing pretty much straight away.

Furthermore, two players who looked to have settled quickly have been injured for the current run of form.

Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate have both looked brilliant but they’ve been missing for a lot of the season.

Cooper deserves to have plenty of credit left in the tank.

Crucially, however, we know that football doesn’t work like that in the modern era, with results and performances both in need of improvement.

Cooper handed Forest stay of execution

This will be news that will delight the fans.

Nobody wants to see the Reds relegated but some fans would take it if it meant keeping Cooper as the club’s manager.

That is understandable.

Forest were brilliant last season and Cooper was unbelievably humble during last season and spoke about the ‘we’ and ‘us’, rather than the ‘I’.

The City Ground is now certain to be rocking on Monday night.

Another Midlands-derby lies in store for Forest and for Cooper’s sake, the Reds really need to get back to winning ways.
