Gerhard Struber is a surprise candidate to replace Steve Cooper if Nottingham Forest decide to sack him, according to The Sun.
The ex-Barnsley manager is currently in charge of the New York Red Bulls where he has been since 2020.
Interestingly, Struber is one of the names on the shortlist, yet Dane Murphy who worked with him in South Yorkshire could be about to leave.
Struber, 45 is still relatively inexperienced when it comes to being a head coach having started his managerial career in 2017.
He managed FC Liefering for one season during 2017/18 and then had a year with Wolfsburger in 2019.
Barnsley came calling in 2019 and he achieved a great escape by keeping the Tykes in the Championship when relegation seemed certain.
During his time at Oakwell, he had a win ratio of 35%, although it’s fair to say that he had limited resources at the club.
In October 2020, New York came calling and Murphy wasn’t going to stand in his way of such an opportunity.
His time in the USA has gone pretty well and he’s currently on a win ratio of 42% having taken charge of 73 matches.
The Austrian head coach recently turned down Manchester United too.
His compatriot Ralf Rangnick wanted him on the coaching staff at Old Trafford last season but he rejected the advances.
Struber is a candidate to replace Cooper
The coach is a very passionate individual on the touchline and he’d likely relish a Premier League chance.
It does seem somewhat risky, however, given a lack of elite experience.
Forest could part with Cooper who has overseen six defeats in eight Premier League matches but if they do, they will have to choose carefully.
The Reds don’t want to make a change and then continue a poor run of form.
In an ideal world, the new manager would come in and make an immediate impact but there are no guarantees of that.
Struber is undoubtedly a good coach but moving to Forest at this stage of his managerial career might just be a bridge too far.
